Many of the recipes on this list are dairy free as written, and a lot of the paleo and Whole30 ones use ghee. If you’re cooking for people who don’t eat dairy, here is exactly what to swap in and for what!
The handful of recipes that are all about the cheese (the whipped feta dip, cheesy mashed potatoes, crispy parmesan potatoes, the cornbread casserole, and the cottage cheese pumpkin cheesecake bars) don’t have an easy swap, so I’d skip them. Otherwise, make the dairy-free mashed potatoes instead and nobody will miss out.
Butter: Vegan butter (Miyokos is my favorite, Earth Balance works too). In pie crusts and baking, melted coconut oil works just as well.
Ghee: Vegan butter for 100% dairy free. Ghee is clarified butter with the milk solids cooked off, so it’s what I reach for in paleo and Whole30 recipes, but swap it if dairy is an allergy.
Cream cheese: Kite Hill almond milk cream cheese (plain, or the chive one for the sausage dip).
Milk: Unsweetened almond milk, or full fat coconut milk when the recipe needs something creamy. Stir the can before you measure, it separates!
Heavy cream: Coconut cream, the thick part at the top of a can of full fat coconut milk.
Whipped cream: A dairy free whipped topping, or Silk dairy free whipping cream if you want to whip your own.
Shredded or crumbled cheese: Vegan shreds where the cheese is baked in. Where it’s a topping, just leave it off.
Boursin: Dairy free Boursin cheese.
Greek yogurt: A dairy free Greek yogurt, or in the chicken salad just use more mayo.
And if you have Celiac, read the label on the dairy free stuff too! Gluten sneaks into the strangest places.
