Thank you to Jovial Foods for sponsoring this post!
Any other Hamburger Helper fans out there? I used to make the cheesy, yummy boxed kind when I was younger and it was the BEST! Except, not exactly the healthiest! When Jovial Foods asked me to help with their new grain free Cassava pasta launch, I knew I had to recreate this delicious childhood favorite in a healthier way. This One Pot Paleo Hamburger Helper is so simple to make and uses minimal ingredients. I hope your family loves it as much as mine did!
What Ingredients do I need to make this One Pot Paleo Hamburger Helper?
- The main ingredient and what makes this paleo is Jovial Food’s new grain free cassava pasta! You can click here to find out where you can purchase it near you (and it’s also sold on their website).
- Grassfed ground beef
- Onion
- Minced garlic
- Canned diced tomatoes
- Chicken or beef broth
- Paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper
The “cheese” sauce is made from cashews and is completely dairy free. For this, you’ll need:
- raw, unsalted cashews
- minced garlic
- lemon juice
- nutritional yeast – this is inactive yeast that gives dishes a “cheesy” flavor without the dairy. I get it at Trader Joe’s near the parmesan cheese
- sea salt
That’s it!

One Pot Paleo Hamburger Helper
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil or avocado oil
- ½ onion, diced
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- 1 lb grassfed ground beef
- 1 15 oz can diced tomatoes, with juices
- 3.5 cups chicken broth , or beef broth
- ½ tsp paprika
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1.5 boxes Jovial Foods grain free cassava elbows, 12 oz total
"Cheese" Sauce
- ¾ cup raw, unsalted cashews
- 1 clove minced garlic
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp nutritonal yeast
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- ½ cup water
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add in the onion, garlic, and ground beef. Saute for 5-7 minutes until the beef is mostly browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Add in the diced tomatoes, broth, and spices. Stir and bring it to a boil, then add in the cassava pasta. Cook it for 10 minutes (or according to package directions if using another pasta), stirring frequently to prevent anything from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
- While the pasta is cooking, make the "cheese" sauce. Combine all of the ingredients in a high-powered blender and blend on high for 30 seconds - 1 minute until very smooth and creamy. When the pasta is done, it may look like there is excess liquid in the pot. This is okay - it will thicken while standing! Stir in the "cheese" sauce and top with chopped parsley, if desired. Serve and enjoy!

I was skeptical bc my 14 yr old is super picky and loves cheese but my 16 yr old can’t have dairy. Plus I’m not a great cook. This dish is DELISH!
Will be making this over and over!
Thank you ☺️
How long will this stay in the fridge? Does it freeze well?
This was amazing! Everyone loved it… even the picky kiddos! What are the nutrition facts?
Thanks Karee! I am slowly working through my site and adding the nutritional facts for all recipes – will be doing this one soon!
Another amazing recipe…not that I’m surprised at all since my family and I seriously love all your recipes! I am in my first trimester and food is a struggle for me right now so I was excited that this sounded good as it’s a healthier version and man did it hit the spot! I also appreciate how easy it was to make this as being in the kitchen lately makes me nauseous. Definitely a recipe that I will be making again and again!
This is my go to recipe for an easy meal. My husband loves it and so do I! I’ve even done a taco spin on it by adding beans and corn. Thank you for turning me toward jovial pasta, it is by far the best grain free kind I’ve tried.
All the reviewers are right! This recipe is a winner! Delicious! I doubled all the spices and used jovial brown rice pasta because thats what I had on hand. So, so good! I will definitely make this again!
Thanks Megan!!
Hi Mary,
How much cheese can we use if we do not want to make this dairy free?
Thanks
I would say 4 oz of cream cheese or 1/2 cup cheese
This has become a staple in our house! We love it so much!
I’m so glad to hear this Megan!
I love this. It’s one of our go-to meals. Thank you Mary! You help us with our Paleo diet!
Made this tonight and loved it! It was just so wonderful to eat something with pasta in it again!!!! I’m just wondering if you have any idea how many calories are in each serving. Thank you so much.
Hi! I don’t track macros on my recipes (yet) but hope to start soon!
Great recipe! My entire family loves it. It’s exciting to have a dairy free option that tastes great too. We will definitely have this over and over.
Easy, delicious, and entirely reminiscent of the original Hamburger Helper – but without all the guilt! Love it!
Is there a nut free cheese you can sub in? My husband has a it allergy. This looks so good!!
You could stir in 1/2 cup of cream cheese if you tolerate dairy! Otherwise I am not sure of a dairy free cheese that is also nut free.
Do you use nutritional yeast powder or flakes? Which brand is your favorite? Thank you!
I use flakes from Trader Joe’s! 🙂
This was so good and so easy to make! I have a go to “healthier” Hamburger Helper recipe I make for my family, but so happy you created a Paleo version! I used 2 lbs of hamburger, but kept everything else the same. This recipe will definitely be consumed on a regular rotation in our house. Thank you!
This was so good! Definitely kid friendly and so easy to make. Thanks for sharing!
So good! I can not believe this is paleo. Satisfied the comfort food craving for sure.
My husband and I loved this!! We both grew up with our moms making hamburger helper. Definitely keeping this recipe on hand!
Awesome, thanks Megan!
All I can say is Y-U-M! This was so delicious and easy to make. Definitley will be adding it in to my rotation.
Thank you, Shannon!!
Did you have to soak the cashews?
You only need to soak them if you don’t have a high-powered blender like a Vitamix! I didn’t soak them. You just need to blend on high for about 1 min to get it really creamy 🙂
Mary never disappoints!! So creamy. Exactly what I wanted for a healthier alternative, while still tasting and feeling like comfort food.
Thank you Mahea!!
