What is a Piña Colada Cocktail/Mocktail?

A classic pina colada is a tropical alcoholic drink typically made with white rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut. It’s a popular vacation cocktail and is super easy to make into a virgin piña colada recipe for kids and non-drinkers.

The traditional pina colada mocktail version is a refreshing and delicious frozen drink with tons of tropical flavor. Instead of rum, it typically contains a mixture of pineapple juice, coconut cream, and ice cubes blended until smooth and served with a dollop of whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and fresh pineapple wedge.

Some other variations of the Piña Colada Mocktail may also include lime juice or simple syrup to enhance the flavor.

What Makes This Recipe Great?

My version of this sweet, blended drink has all the original’s delicious tropical pineapple and coconut flavors but uses unsweetened coconut milk and is sweetened with 100% pineapple juice and maple syrup.

The result is a refreshing and sweet tropical drink that is perfect for those who want to enjoy the taste of a piña colada without alcohol. Plus, it’s gluten-free, dairy-free, alcohol-free, and vegan!

A fun and refreshing drink for the whole family!

Ingredient Notes

recipe ingredients in small bowls and labeled.
  • frozen pineapple chunks: Using frozen pineapple chunks eliminates the need for ice so that the drink won’t get watered down.
  • light canned coconut milk: Make sure to use a can of unsweetened coconut milk. I used the light version for this recipe. If you prefer full fat, feel free to use it. You can also use a can of unsweetened coconut cream.
  • 100% pineapple juice: I like to find 100% juice so there are no added sweeteners.
  • maple syrup: Omit if you don’t want it sweet

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Blend all ingredients in a high-powered blender on high for 1 minute or until creamy.
  2. If you prefer for it to be thicker, add more frozen pineapple and blend again. If you prefer for it to be a thinner texture, add more coconut milk.
  3. Pour into your favorite cocktail glass and garnish with cherries, whipped cream, pineapple wedges, or a fun drink umbrella. Enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • Sweetness: To make it sweeter, add more maple syrup.
  • Cocktail Version: If you want to make this into a quick and easy cocktail, add 3 oz of rum to the blender. You may need to add more pineapple chunks if it’s too thin.
  • Blender: I recommend a high-speed blender to get this pina colada mocktail super smooth and creamy. This is the one I have, and I love it! If you don’t have a good blender, you can also use a food processor.

Serving Tips

  • Serve this pina colada mocktail in your favorite glass and top with whipped cream, a maraschino cherry, and a fresh pineapple wedge if desired.
  • You can also add a fun cocktail umbrella or a hibiscus flower to make it extra fun and tropical. You can typically find these online or at local grocery stores.

Recipe FAQs

What are the ingredients in a pina colada mocktail?

In this recipe, there are just 4! Frozen pineapple chunks, 100% pineapple juice, canned coconut milk, and maple syrup! Makes the perfect special treat for special occasions or hot summer days!

What is al alternative alcohol for piña colada?

Some pina colada recipes will substitute vodka for rum, but rum is the standard. In a pina colada mocktail, there is no alcohol, but if you’re missing the rum flavor, you can try a zero-proof non-alcoholic rum alternative.
