Ingredient Notes

recipe ingredients in nesting bowls and labeled

Gluten-Free Flour: I like King Arthur brand Measure for Measure (1:1) gluten-free flour.

Baking Powder: Make sure it’s gluten-free!

Apples: I like to use 3 Honeycrisp and 3 granny smith cored, sliced, and cut into bite-sized chunks.

Arrowroot Powder: You can also use tapioca flour or cornstarch as a thickener, but I prefer arrowroot powder.

Step by Step

  1. Preheat your oven to 375. Spray a 10.5″ x 7.5″ rectangular baking dish with cooking oil (I used a white Staub brand dish but any dish will work).
  2. Combine the filling ingredients in a bowl and mix until combined. Set aside.
  3. Combine the topping ingredients in a bowl and mix with a fork until it turns into a crumb consistency with small chunks.
  4. Sprinkle the topping evenly on top of the apple mixture.
  5. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until bubbling around the edges. Serve with vanilla ice cream, if desired. Enjoy!

Mary’s Tips & Tricks

Dairy Free/Vegan: This recipe is entirely dairy free and vegan. If you’re okay with dairy, you can substitute regular butter instead of the vegan alternative.

Easy Sugar Swaps: If you’d prefer to use brown sugar, you can swap that out for coconut sugar. Just be mindful that it won’t be as “healthy” if you use regular brown sugar. If you’d like a lower sugar option, swap out the coconut sugar for brown sugar Swerve.

Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Warm up in the microwave when ready to serve.

How to Serve: Serve warm, topped with your favorite vegan vanilla ice cream (or regular vanilla if you prefer!).

Recipe FAQs

What can I substitute for butter?

You can use coconut oil or vegan butter instead of regular butter in this healthy apple crumble. I use vegan butter to keep it dairy-free, and I also really love the taste and texture!

Can you freeze healthy apple crumble?

Yes! This recipe is great for freezing and will last 3 months in the freezer. For baked apple crumble, place leftovers in an airtight, freezer-safe container. Defrost overnight in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven.

Can I make a double batch of this recipe?

Yes! Click “print” on the recipe below and adjust the number of servings you’d like to make. If you want to make two batches, simply double the servings and the ingredient amounts will automatically adjust. Make sure to use two casserole dishes and cook separately.

The perfect fall dessert (or breakfast- since I’m having leftovers tomorrow morning). I used 1 cup oat flour instead of 1:1 gf flour. I only had 4 apples so I did half the amount of filling ingredients and baked in an 8×8 pan. Delicious as are every other MWL recipes!

      Thank you Chelsea!!

This is absolutely delicious. I took it to a church meal and someone asked if that was brown sugar on the top and I told her no, there is no brown sugar in it! Thank you for this great recipe.
