Why You'll Love This Cottage Cheese Smoothie Recipe

Cottage cheese used to be one of those bland foods, often just served in a bowl with fruit, which never quite appealed to me. But today, it's completely transformed! In recent years, cottage cheese has made a major comeback as a versatile, tasty ingredient that adds protein and elevates everything from main dishes to sides and even desserts.

From savory cottage cheese recipes like High Protein Mac and Cheese and Cottage Cheese Alfredo Sauce, dips like Cottage Cheese Ranch and this viral high-protein Cottage Cheese Queso, and desserts like these Chocolate Protein Cheesecakes, cottage cheese is working hard at a rebrand and I'm here for it!

Today, we're making an easy cottage cheese smoothie recipe with just 5 simple ingredients. The resulting high-protein smoothie tastes so much like cheesecake! It makes a great quick snack or breakfast.

Ingredient Notes

recipe ingredients in small bowls and labeled
  • frozen mixed berries: I used frozen fruit, but you can use fresh fruit if that's what you have on hand. Keep in mind that you will also need to add a handful of ice cubes if using fresh berries.
  • plain cottage cheese: I like the Good Culture brand. Use whatever kind of cottage cheese you prefer, but I do recommend full-fat cottage cheese for optimal creamy texture and highest protein.
  • chia seeds: Use these in the smoothie and use a sprinkle of chia seeds to top the smoothie as well.
  • vanilla protein powder: Use whatever you use to make protein shakes- Vanilla is my favorite, but you can opt for chocolate or strawberry if that's what you have on hand. I like to use Be Well By Kelly brand. Use code MARY for a discount!
  • milk of choice: I used unsweetened almond milk. You can use another plant-based alternative or regular milk if desired.

Expert Tips

  • For dairy-free, use dairy-free Greek yogurt instead of cottage cheese. This will reduce the protein amount in the recipe by about 15g.
  • For a nut-free option, use soy milk, oat milk, or regular whole milk (or low-fat).
  • Smoothies are a great way to use up produce you have on hand- feel free to customize this recipe however you like.
    • Some common customizations:
      • Throw in a handful of spinach or other leafy greens
      • Use a different fruit: Fresh or frozen strawberries, blueberries, etc.
      • To make it sweeter, add frozen banana, a drizzle of honey, or maple syrup.
      • Add healthy fats like almond butter, peanut butter, or avocado.
      • Make a smoothie bowl with toppings of choice (granola, chia seeds, hemp hearts, shredded coconut, fresh fruit, and more.).
  • Full-fat cottage cheese yields a creamier texture and is higher in protein, but you can use low-fat or nonfat if preferred.

Recipe FAQs

Does cottage cheese taste good in smoothies?

Cottage cheese has a mild, tangy taste and is masked well by the other ingredients in the smoothie. It adds a super creamy texture to the smoothie and gives off a "cheesecake" vibe similar to cream cheese.

Is cottage cheese a good substitute for yogurt in smoothies?

Yes! It's actually higher in protein than yogurt and works well in smoothies. However, if you're dairy-free, feel free to substitute your favorite non-dairy yogurt.
