What Makes This Recipe Great
If you love hash browns but don’t want to use a pan or deal with grease splatters, then these Air Fryer Frozen Hash Browns are for you! Sometimes cooking hash browns in a pan result in them turning into mush or mashed potatoes – but not these. The perfect side dish for eggs, bacon, or a vessel for some sausage gravy. This is one of my personal favorite recipes and breakfast items. Ingredient Notes
Frozen hash browns: I like Cascadian Farms frozen hash browns because they only have one ingredient: potatoes! Many frozen hash browns and other frozen potato products have additives and even gluten. Make sure to read your labels when buying frozen hash browns. I get these at Sprouts or Wegmans. Your local grocery store should have frozen hash browns in the freezer aisle. I used a 16 oz package.
Olive oil: I’ve found this gives the crispy potatoes the best flavor. You can also use avocado oil! I prefer not to use vegetable oil or canola oil. You don’t need a lot of oil to get the best crispy hash browns.
Spices: I keep it simple and use salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Feel free to add in some paprika, onion powder, or seasonings of choice.
How To Make Frozen Hash Browns In The Air Fryer
Only a few simple steps are needed to get golden brown, delicious hash browns every single time!
Step 1: Add the frozen hash browns to a bowl and pour the oil over top. Add the spices. Toss to combine.
Step 2: Add the hash browns into your air fryer basket or air fryer tray and pat down into a single layer. If using more than 16 oz, cook in two batches.
Step 3: I did not preheat my air fryer. Cook at 375 for 17-18 minutes, shaking or tossing every 5-6 minutes for best results. For extra crispy hash browns, add another 3-4 minutes to cooking time. This is my personal preference! Serve with desired breakfast items like a fried egg, or a side of ketchup or sour cream.
Mary’s Tips & Tricks For Crispy Air Fryer Hash Browns
- Use frozen shredded hash browns to avoid soggy or mushy potatoes.
- Use Cascadian Farms brand for Whole30 / Paleo.
- Store leftover hash browns in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Press the shredded potatoes down into an even layer. If you are using more than 16 oz of hash browns, you will need to cook in 2 batches to ensure they get crispy. It will depend on the size of your air fryer.
- This recipe works best for shredded potatoes, not hashbrown patties. To cook frozen hash brown patties in the air fryer, cook at 400 for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- To reheat hash browns in the air fryer, cook for 3-5 minutes at 375.
Recipe FAQ’s for Easy Air Fryer Hash Browns
You can get a silicone liner or a piece of parchment paper that is made to go inside air fryer baskets. I didn’t use one and a few fell through – they still cooked perfectly and it wasn’t a big deal!
I’ve found this recipe works best with frozen hash browns vs. using fresh ones. Fresh potatoes can get mushy and don’t get as crispy.
Shredded potatoes in their natural form are gluten free. However, some packaged or frozen hash browns may contain additives, flavorings, or other ingredients that could include gluten. Always check the product’s ingredient list and look for any gluten-containing additives. Also look out for “may contain wheat” or “produced on equipment shared with wheat” if you have Celiac disease.
